يحكى ان احد الملوك أراد ان يمتحن افراد رعيته، ويعرف الاذكى من بينهم ليجعل منه وزيره الأول، فأمر بصنع ثلاث دمى متشابهة من حيث الحجم واللون والوزن والشكل.
ما ان أنجزت الدمى، وكانت متشابهة فعلا، حتى كلف الملك واحدا من امهر صناعه بإدخال بعض التعديلات على الدمى الثلاث، دون أي تغيير لا في حجمها، ولا في لونها، ولا في وزنها أو شكلها، بحيث جاءت احداها لا قيمة لها، والثانية قيمتها قليلة، بينما جاءت الثالثة كبيرة القيمة.
وضعت الدمى الثلاث في الساحة العامة وأعلن المنادون أن الملك سيكافئ من يكتشف السر الكامن وراء الاختلاف بين هذه الدمى من حيث قيمتها، على الرغم من التشابه، لا بل التطابق فيما بينها.
بدأ الناس يتوافدون الى الساحة، رجالا ونساء، شيوخا وشبابا، وكل منهم يمنى النفس باكتشاف السر، لكن أيا منهم لم ينجح في ذلك.
مرت الأيام والاسابيع والأشهر دون أن يظهر ذلك الفطين الذكي.
English translation
Once upon a time, a king wanted to test his subjects so that he could identify the smartest of them to appoint as his first minister. He ordered three dolls to be produced, similar in size, colour, weight and shape.
As soon as these very similar dolls had been made, the king commissioned one of his most skilful manufacturers to modify them, but without making any alteration to their size, colour, weight or shape. This was to render the first of them to be of no value, the second of little value, and the third of high value.
The three dolls were placed in the public arena, and callers announced that the king would reward whoever could identify the secret behind the difference between the dolls according to their value — notwithstanding the fact that they are similar, or indeed identical.
People— men and women, young and old — began to flock into the arena, each wishing to discover the secret, yet none of them was able to do so.
Days, weeks and even months have elapsed, but no smart subject has yet appeared.
